Pray for Japan

As the full horror of the devastation caused by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami two days ago in Japan begins to unfold before our eyes, you can't help but notice that the phrase #prayforjapan is trending on Twitter, being reported by several newspapers and is being taken up by celebrities across the globe.  At times like this people like to feel that they are making a contribution no matter how small and many people do this by praying however, a few derisive and derogatory comments have been creeping onto the internet on various forums and on the comment sections of newspaper reports. These comments are mainly rubbishing the idea of people praying for Japan and several comments suggest that instead of praying we should all basically get up off our backsides and do something.
