Beating the Spammers

No More Spam!!
This is just a very quick post tonight to say that I am having to put word verification back on 'Cupcakes and Cadenzas; in the hope that it will stop or a least reduce the number of spam comments that the blog is receiving.

Over the last few weeks I have been getting anywhere between 5 and 10 comments every day ranging from offers of payday loans to viagra to protein shakes for bodybuilders and I am starting to get a bit fed up with it. They are being caught by Blogger's security and placed in the spam folder and I do have comment moderation on but it still annoys me. Perhaps it's because I haven't been posting regularly. I would be interested to find out if anyone else is having this problem too.

I don't get this on my Wordpress.org blogs but, having said that, I do pay a monthly fee to have all the spam caught, analysed and deleted if it definitely is spam. Blogger is free and they do a pretty good job of stopping the spam getting through but I would like to try and stop it altogether.

So that's it for tonight. I apologise for having to do this as I know word verification can be frustrating at times but hopefully it will be a temporary measure.

As I said, I would be interested to find out if it's just this blog having this problem or if it's a problem affecting everyone. Let me know.

Comments

Recently, I started getting a lot of spam... something like 75 over a three-day period. For me, it was an easy cure. (so far) I changed the parameters as to who could post a comment. Before, "anonymous" comments were okay. Not anymore. Since I changed that, I haven'y gotten any spam at all. (YAY!)I refuse to institute the word verification thingie on my blog. Too hard for me to see, and I've heard others say the same thing. Be forewarned, while you have that on your blog, a lot of people won't bother to leave comments at all. Good luck with stomping out the spam devils.

Hi Susan.
I don't know why I didn't think of that. It's so much easier! I know people hate word verification, me especially, but I couldn't think of anything else at the time. I've now changed the parameters and taken word verification off again so thank you for the suggestion.

Once I stopped allowing anonymous comments, the spam dropped to almost nothing. And no comments without approval on posts older than four days. Might try that since so many have an aversion to WV.

Hi Diane,
I changed the settings yesterday so that anonymous comments wouldn't be accepted and so far I haven't had any spam so fingers crossed. I would have had four or five in that time span normally so hopefully that's the answer.
I can understand why people don't like WV. Very rarely do I actually get the 'word' first time and sometimes it's so difficult that I just give up.
I like the idea of no comments without approval on older posts. I've only just realised that it's always the older posts that the spammers pick up on. Thanks for that!

Stop! It's Going Too Fast and I Want to Get Off!

Carousel Okay - I don't actually mean that I want things to stop so that I can get off because I'm having too much fun but, over the last few months, my life has become a daily whirlwind of new businesses, taking on new projects, building websites and building a brand and it's not showing any sign of slowing down. I have loved every minute of it so far but it has meant that so many other things in my life have had to be put on the back burner whilst all this has been going on, including Cupcakes and Cadenzas. It will all have been worth it in the long run but I just want to say thanks to everyone who has stuck around and not abandoned this blog and to say that I haven't forgotten about it or you. Why I love Cupcakes and Cadenzas so much and refuse to give up on it it is that it was the very first blog that I set up and is therefore my 'baby' as far as blogs go. I have several other blogs set up for various business ventures but Cupcakes and Cadenzas is

The Sad Songs Blogfest

This is the first time I've ever taken part in a Blogfest and it has been great fun! Thank you to Diane for organising it. You can find Diane's blog by clicking here  Check out her list of inspirational, sad songs. I have had a ball going through old cds, trying to pick out my top 10 sad songs that inspire me. I have to admit that I could have come up with way more than 10 but I decided to give myself a limit. These songs hold no particular memories for me but they are songs that tug at my heart strings every time I hear them and if I'm ever feeling down and wanting to wallow in self-pity, then these are the songs I would put into my playlist and play whilst drinking a bottle glass or two of wine. Are you sitting comfortably? (click on any of the titles to hear the songs on youTube) Hello by Evanescence . The haunting piano accompaniment and the striking voice of Amy lee make this (in my opinion) one of the most moving songs this band have ever released. All O

A-Z Blogging Challenge: E is for...Elsie Marley

This is a rhyme that I hadn't heard until I started this challenge although some people I have spoken to have been surprised that I hadn't heard it so I'm learning stuff from this too. 'Elsie Marley's grown so fine. She won't get up to feed the swine, But lies in bed 'til eight or nine! And surely does she take her time.' This little rhyme seems innocent enough. Elsie is obviously a lady who has, for what ever reason, got ideas above her station. She has become so fine that she won't get out of bed before 8 or 9am and refuses to feed the pigs. When she does get up she certainly doesn't rush to do anything. The rhyme has been changed with good reason. Her name was actually Eppie Marly. Here is the original. Bonnie Prince Charlie 'Saw ye Eppie Marly, honey, The woman that sells the barley, honey? She's lost her pocket and a' her money, Wi followin' Jacobite Charlie, honey. Eppie Marly's turned sae fine, She&
